National Front: National Labor Relations Board

Yesterday, February 2, 2010, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) held a hearing on the re-nomination of Craig Becker to become a member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).  As we previously informed you, Becker was nominated once by President Obama, but that nomination was squashed when Senator John McCain put a hold on it and the Senate returned the nomination to the White House for reconsideration.  Since then, President Obama decided to re-nominate Becker.

Senator McCain's actions to prevent Becker from becoming a member of the NLRB came after Becker was already individually submitted to the HELP committee and approved by a 15-8 vote.  It is believed that Democrats will want to submit Becker to the Senate for a full vote as a package along with the two other Board nominees, Mark Pearce and Brian Hayes, so that the individual scrutiny placed on him will be diminished.  There are currently only two members on the NLRB, Peter C. Schaumber and Wilma B. Liebman.  Schaumber was originally appointed to the Board by President George W. Bush and Liebman was originally appointed by President Bill Clinton and reappointed twice by President Bush.

State Of California Front: Agricultural Labor Relations Board

Similarly, Democrat Guillermo "Willie" Guerrero has been appointed to California's Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Guerrero has been a member of the California Bar since 1998 and practiced in the areas of Administrative Law, Agricultural Law, Environmental Law, Governmental Law, and Political Law.  He worked as Legislative Assistant for Senator Mike Thompson from 1996 to 1998, Chief of Staff for Assemblymember Gloria Romero from 1998 to 1999, an Assistant Secretary of State for Secretary of State Kevin Shelley from 2003 to 2005, and as a principal consultant for Senator Carole Migden from 2005 to 2006.  Additionally, he has been the Chief Consultant for the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Developments and the Economy as well as the Chief Consultant for the Assembly Committee on Elections, Reapportionment and Constitutional Amendments.  Genevieve Shiroma and Cathryn Rivera-Hernandez are the current Board members, making Guerrero the third member.
